Certainly this is an experience you will not forget too soon, and since elephants have been part of the Thai culture since many centuries, there is also no better place than Thailand to see this gentle giant. To really experience these lovely pachyderms, we highly recommend to do it with both feet firmly on the ground. This way you can perfectly interact with Asia’s largest land animal, observe their different characters and stare deep into their intelligent-looking little eyes on the same level. An “Elephant Experience” is an ethical, educative and very fun way to get up close and personal with Asia’s largest land animal, all while standing next to one. It includes preparing their favorite treat, feeding them their daily meal, and interacting with these lovely pachyderms. In addition, you can also see them enjoying a giant mud bath and exploring their free roaming pen in a way that is as close to nature as possible for these domestic elephants – Experiencing this amazing animal in a way that is natural and without the need to sit on them is surely the best way to support their future survival in this world. Book a Private Elephant Trekking The elephant experience is quickly becoming the most popular way to encounter elephants in Thailand, due to its ethical roots. Many travelers participating in an elephant experience (as opposed to an elephant trek where you sit on the elephants) generally reported much higher satisfaction with their elephant encounter than guests who opted for an elephant trek did. They also feel satisfied that this is the most ethical way to see elephants in Thailand, safe in the knowledge they are supporting a more natural form of tourism with elephants. In case you do decide to go elephant trekking, please research your tour company carefully on the internet and ensure you do choose a reputable operator, which takes good care of its animals and is properly certified. - Khao Sok Lake Cheow Lan Lake or Ratchaprapha Dam Reservoir | KhaoSokRaftHouse
Also called Cheow Lan Lake or Ratchaprapha Dam Reservoir, Khao Sok Lake is the best part of the national park where more interesting attractions are located, where wildlife watching possibilities are much better. Khao Sok National Park CHEOW LAN LAKE Visit Khao Sok Lake CHEOW LAN LAKE What are the best things to do in Phuket is one of the most important questions people ask us when planning a trip. We explored the island for 30 years to bring you the best of Phuket, sorted in what we saw and what people liked the most among the incredibly vast range of attractions, activities and tours, from fabulous beaches and natural wonders to glittering temples and human-made attractions. There are many raft houses/floating bungalows spread all over the lake, from which it is possible to visit caves, viewpoints, limestone hills and get to some interesting trails. Kayaking among limestone hills in morning mist is a must. The lake contains over 100 limestone outcrops and has six tributary regions. The tributaries are; Klong Long, Klong Ka, Klong Pey, Klong Yee, Khlong Saeng and Khlong Mon where Khlong in Thai means river. Parts of the lake belong to Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary. Municipal pier Cheow Lan Dam Ratchaprapha Dam is located in Khaopang sub-district of Baantakhuun, Surat Thani province in Southern Thailand. Getting to the dam is no big deal and can be done in more than one way. If you are a plane traveler then the nearest airports for you are Surat Thani Airport, Krabi Airport, and Phuket Airport, then take a public transport to Khao Sok National Park's entrance. Train is also an option since that Surat Thani has a train station but you will have to follow it by a bus or similar transport to Khao Sok (trains are subject to delays though). Taking the bus is a very simple option especially if you are already in Surat Thani, there are multiple bus rides to Khao Sok from Surat Thani, you can also take a bus from Phuket, Takua Pa, Bangkok and Khao Lak. Minibusses and vans are a popular option, these can be taken with a combination of bus and boat transports from Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui as well as the bus only from Surat Thani and Bangkok. By boat, however, is the most suitable option for travelers on a budget and for island to island traveling. Ratchaprapha Dam Information Ratchaprapha or Cheow Lan Dam is a multipurpose dam; it is built for irrigation, electricity generation, flood control, and fishing. King Bhumibol Adulyadej gave it the sweet name “Rajjaprabha” meaning the light of the kingdom. The dam is 165 meters long and 95 meters high with clay core. Activities and to urs on the Cheow Lan Lake There are a number of activities on and around the Cheow Lan Lake, you can visit caves, climb a waterfall or hike to a lookout point. Some activities are seasonal and depend on the weather in Khao Sok. Also the location of the floating house where you are staying often has an influence on the activity you are going to do. SYMBOL OF CHEOW LAN LAKE MORNING SAFARI CLIMB THE BANG HOI WATERFALL CORAL CAVE PRA KAY PETCH CAVE NAM TALU CAVE KLONG KA WAMP FOREST KAYAKING AND SWIMMING CHEOW LAN LAKE VIEWPOINT (KRAISON VIEWPOINT) PAKARANG CAVE (CORAL CAVE) To visit the Coral Cave you make a trip of about 45 minutes through the jungle to a lake in Cheow Lan Lake. From here you go on a motorized bamboo raft towards the Coral Cave. This cave is over 10.000 years old and in the cave you can see special rock formations. Because the trek to the Coral Cave is not very strenuous, this is also a fun activity for families with children. NAM TALU CAVE To get to the Nam Talu Cave you first have to make a spicy but very beautiful trekking through the jungle, crossing small streams. The route is 2.5 kilometers long and takes about 2 to 3 hours. During this jungle trekking you have to be prepared for more than just wet feet. Nam Talu Cave means freely translated water cave and the water in the cave is at some points at chest height. You will use a headlamp to look for the small nocturnal animals that live in the cave. But discovering the cave is also a very special experience! The Nam Talu Cave Tour cannot be visited in the rainy season, because the water in the cave can be too high due to a lot of rainfall. KAYAKING AND SWIMMING At the raft houses there are kayaks you can use for free, you can paddle on the lake without a guide and make your own mini safari on Cheow Lan Lake, very fun to do! On some raft houses they have built scaffoldings and such from which you can jump off. Officially you are required by National Park rules to wear a lifejacket when swimming or on the boat, but most raft house owners don’t check this very strictly. In any case, life jackets should always be present BANG HOI WATERFALL With the longtail boat you will sail to the Bang Hoi waterfall near the shore of Cheow Lan Lake, from there you will climb the waterfall, literally! You climb over rocks, tree trunks and use the natural steps of the waterfall. A wet suit is guaranteed! Of course you can swim in the waterfall in some places. CHEOW LAN LAKE MORNING SAFARI The morning safari is one you don’t want to miss! It’s a bit early to get up but that’s more than worth it! When the sun rises y ou go with a longtail boat and a guide on the lake. The longtail boat sails to several places on the lake and then turns off the engine. The murmuring water, the first sunbeams, a bird concert and in the background the whoop whoop sound of the Gibbons! The morning safari on Khao Sok Lake is an unforgettable experience, if you want to experience this you have to stay in floating houses on the lake. This activity included in the price of the overnight lake tour. 1/1 The symbol of Cheow Lan Lake (Khao Sam Kler) The Guilin Viewpoint is very popular, you can see it on almost every picture when it comes to Cheow Lan Lake. And that’s not for nothing because the surroundings are incredibly beautiful! The Guilin Viewpoint consists of three large limestone cliffs that tower out of the water. A perfect place for an Instagram moment and you can also take a refreshing dip there! Guilin Viewpoint is a regular part of the tour on Cheow Lan Lake, no matter if you took a day trip or stayed overnight on the lake. You will always visit this location! CHEOW LAN LAKE VIEWPOINT A brisk walk and climb to the top for breathtaking views over the lake! Cheow Lan Lake is 763 square kilometres and from the viewpoint you can see quite a bit of the lake at a glance! If the weather is good you can even look all the way to Ranong Province! On the way to the viewpoint you can also look for animals, birds and insects. The climb to the viewpoint is regularly part of a day trip to the lake, but also if you sleep on the lake it can be part of your overnight lake tour. Klong Ka-Swamp forest Nature trail The Klong Ka Jungle Trail is a route that takes you through the jungle for two hours. For the hikers it is a tough trip, where you have to keep the concentration. However, for someone who thinks to take a look at nature, this hike is disappointing. The guide explains little and the pace is quite high. Inside the Ratchaprapha Dam Reservoir About 10 minutes away from Klong Ka Tourism Development Center by long-tailed boat. The distance of walking to study nature is 1.30 kilometers. Within the route, there are various informational signs through 8 signposts. Tourists can visit throughout the year. PRA KAY PETCH CAVE ( DIMON CAVE) Pra Kay Petch Cave or Dimond Cave It is one of the most beautiful caves of Ratchaprapha Dam, with coral stones, stalagmites and stalactites that are unique. The length of the cave is about 100 meters, suitable for tourists to see the beauty. Pra Kay Petch CaveThere is a stone that reflects light and shines. causing it to be named Pra Kay Petch Cave The stalactites here are strange. It is a small stalactite like hair or taproot. The floor of the cave is wet. muddy and slippery Causing the stalagmites at the bottom to become the anchor point for the cave walkers. Khlong Saeng Khlong Ka Khlong Long Khlong Pey Khlong Yee Khlong Mon Khlong Long Khlong Long is the most popular tributary within the lake, situated on the northeast side of the lake, approximately 15-16 km from Cheow Lan Lake Pier. The main attractions of this tributary are limestone hills, a cave and a nice viewpoint accessible by a 2.5 hour long hike through the jungle. There are five raft houses in Khlong Long; Chiew Lan Raft House Plern Prai Raft House Sai Chon Raft House Panvaree Raft House Prai Wan The quality of the raft houses in Khlong Long is much better compared to the others in the lake. Khlong Pey Situated at the southwest end of the lake, approximately 20 km from Cheow Lan Lake Pier. Ton Toey Rafthouse in this tributary was the lake's first ranger station. There is a trailhead a few kilometers west from this rafthouse to Nam Talu Cave, the trail is 4 km long and partly circular. Another 6.5 km long trail to the south leads all the way to the main road 401 further south. Aerial view of the Khlong Pey tributary from a viewpoint View of the Khlong Pey tributary from a viewpoint Khlong Yee Situated on the west side of the lake, Khlong Yee is approximately 27 km from Ratchaprapha Dam. Main activities are guided kayak tours, wildlife watching, hiking to Krai Son viewpoint and hiking to a waterfall during the rainy seasons. Raft houses located in this area are; Krai Son Raft House Tree Tops Floating Bungalows Keeree Warin Raft House 500 Rai Khlong Ka 1/1 Khlong Ka is situated on the south side of the lake, approximately 15 km from Cheow Lan Lake Pier. This tributary has one of the best caves in the park and a great view over a group of limestone hills. There are some great trails between limestone hills to the south. Although the sighting is rare, tapirs have been reported in this area. Klong Ka and Nang Prai are two rafthouses in this part of the lake. Khlong Saeng 1/1 Situated on the northwest side of the lake in Khlong Saeng Wildlife Sanctuary, this tributary is approximately 26 km from Ratchaprapha Dam. Klong Saeng River is the largest watershed feeding the lake, it was the widest river in Thailand before the dam was built. Visitors entering this area must obtain a special permission from Khao Sok National Park headquarters and pay an additional entrance fee for the wildlife sanctuary. This remote part of the lake is very ideal for hiking and the best place for wildlife watching. It is possible to hike into the wildlife sanctuary with the park rangers to the waterfall, old mines from the 60s' and get a chance to see some common animals like gibbons and deer. With some luck even more exciting species like elephant, gaur, mainland serow, great argus and many more can be seen. There are also tapirs, clouded leopards and bear species roaming in the sanctuary. The only raft house in this tributary area is Klong Saeng Raft House owned by the national park, the qualities of the bungalows are poor. Khlong Mon Situated on the north side of the lake, Khlong Mon is approximately 24 km from Cheow Lan Lake Pier. The area consists of high hills and steep valleys, an ideal place to spot hornbills, eagles and other wildlife. A nearly 3 km long exciting trail through the jungle will end up in Khlong Saeng tributary further west. There are few other shorter trails at the north side of the tributary. Tam Gia is the only raft house in this tributary, owned by the national park. Visitor Center area and campsite The visitor center of the national park is located next to the headquarters. There is a campsite, basic toilet/shower facilities, a small canteen/cafe, few accommodations and other premises in the vicinity of the visitor center. There are two trails starting from the visitor center area. One trail is Sip-et Chan Waterfall trail to the north, partly circular and the other one to the other waterfalls to the west.

Khao Sok National Park is a nature reserve in southern Thailand Cheow Lan Lake. It’s home to rare species such as the giant parasitic Rafflesia flower, hornbill birds, gibbons and tigers. KHAO SOK TRAVEL GUIDE Over views Khao Sok National Park is a nature reserve in southern Thailand containing dense virgin jungle, towerlike limestone karst formations and the man-made Cheow Lan Lake. It’s home to rare species such as the giant parasitic Rafflesia flower, hornbill birds, gibbons and tigers. The park can be explored by elephant-back safari, hiking trail, and raft, canoe or kayak via the Sok river. Far more than just a side trip from the beaches of southern Thailand, the magnificent wilds and majestic mountain lake of Khao Sok National Park are one of Asia's premier natural wonders. Khao Sok stretches over some 646 square kms and is part of a greater protected area that also includes Kaeng Krung and Phang Nga national parks and Khlong Nakha and Khlong Saen wildlife sanctuaries. Spanning over 4,000 square km between them, this is a massive protected area in Thailand, and on a map it looks like an entire province of nothing but lakes, rivers, and jungle. If you're going to visit only one national park in Thailand, Khao Sok is arguably your best choice. Due to its rugged, mountainous and expansive terrain, the park and its surrounds have remained mostly untouched by people, and today Khao Sok teems with plants and wildlife. Wild elephants, dusky languars, leopards, bantung, a range of monkeys, snakes, and over 180 species of bird inhabit the park and surrounding sanctuaries. Equally impressive are Khao Sok's plant species, including massive bamboo trees so thick that anyone standing under them in a down pour will remain dry, and the Rafflesia Kerri Meijer flower, or simply "wild lotus" (bua phut) in Thai, which is one of the largest flowers in the world, reaching a diameter of over 75 cm when fully mature. The best chance to see one in bloom is in November or December, but be prepared for its pungent fragrance that smells something like rotten eggs. With countless hiking trails, waterfalls, caves, and viewpoints, it's worth taking at least a few days to explore the park's western area on foot. However, at least half of the Khao Sok experience is the artificial Chiew Lan Lake — one of Thailand's most scenic bodies of fresh water — which features limestone karst cliffs that rise dramatically from calm, pristine emerald water. Numerous inlets reach far into the land like long, watery fingers, karst cliffs of all sizes rise from the surface of the water, and other worldly caves are found throughout the lake. Indeed, exploring Chiew Lan by boat allows visitors a peak at some of Asia's most stunning natural beauty, a topography that's been compared to the haunting cliffs of China's Guilin and Vietnam's Ha Long Bay. For a truly tranquil experience, spending a night or two at one of the national park's floating rafthouse villages within the lake is a must. Apart from hiking and exploring the lake by boat, many visitors take up the opportunity to do guided bird watching hikes, night safari tours, more extreme overnight camping treks, canoe trips along the Sok River, and elephant trekking, all of which are offered by a plethora of tour companies operating near the park's western gates. Orientation Khao Sok is reached by Rte. 401, which connects Takua Pa in the west to Surat Thani in the east and runs directly south of the entire park, which lies within the borders of Surat Thani province but is far closer to Phang Nga and the western Andaman coast. There are no roads running in to the park itself. The visitor centre, most frequented hiking trails and most of the accessible waterfalls are all located in the park's far western side at the village of Khlong Sok. A small, 1.5 km long access road runs from Rte. 401 directly to the park's front gates, and several guesthouses, resorts and restaurants are found here. The pier for Chiew Lan Lake is located some 50 km east of the visitor centre and majority of guesthouses, near Ratchaprapa Dam, and this area feels like a totally separate destination. To get here it's necessary to first pass through the town of Ban Ta Khun near the park's southeastern point, which is a long trip from the western visitor centre. Although Chiew Lan Lake stretches the entire east to west length of the park and forms most of the northern border, virtually all of Khao Sok's land mass from the visitor centre in the west to Ratchaprapa Dam in the east is covered by rugged mountains and thick forest and is not accessible to visitors. Few if any visitors stay in the Ban Ta Khun area, and the vast majority who visit Chiew Lan Lake and stay at its rafthouses, apart from those who have their own wheels, do so as part of a tour. Aside from the pier, only a small restaurant, a few souvenir shops, and a nearby park are all that's found near Ratchaprapa Dam. Directly in front of the pier there is a small national park booth where visitors must purchase tickets to the park if they haven't already done so, but little if any information is offered here and here and there is no visitor centre on the eastern side of the park. Ban Ta Khun, which is 14 km south of the pier, has some local restaurants and markets but there is currently no tourist infrastructure there. Along the access road leading to the gates and visitor centre at Khao Sok's western end, however, there are plenty of places to stay and eat within walking distance of the park and its trails, and this is where the majority of travellers first arrive. At the park's front gates visitors are required to pay the entrance fee (200B for foreigners or 20B for Thais), which is valid for a period of 24 hours. After entering the park the visitor centre is located a short walk from the gates and is staffed by some very friendly park workers and rangers who speak English well and are happy to answer questions. They also hand out decent information brochures, including a couple of rather vague maps, and can provide info on sights, hiking trails, and accommodation. There are some shared and private rooms available here as well, but few foreigners choose to stay within the park when there are cheaper and more comfortable guesthouses so close by. There is also a small restaurant and shop with limited hours here, but neither seem to see much use — the restaurant looked abandoned when we visited although the ranger insisted it did in fact open. All of the hiking trails in this vicinity begin near the visitor centre and restaurant area, and there are clearly marked signs throughout the trails. Travellers will find just about anything they're looking for along the 1.5 km long access road just outside the park, including accommodation to fit all budgets, convenience stores, restaurants, bars, tour companies, Internet cafes that typically charge 2B per minute, motorbike rental, mini bus services, and at least one ATM located just outside the mini mart next to Herb Restaurant. There are also a few banks and ATMs in Ban Ta Khun. We found cell signal to work relatively well except when hiking several km north of the visitor centre and in some of the further reaches (particularly far northern parts) of Chiew Lan Lake. The national park headquarters can supply basic first aid needs, but anything more serious will require a trip to the hospital at either Ban Ta Khun or Takua Pa.
